2022 World Cup Final Results Argentina vs France: Score 3-3 (Pen. 4-2)
Argentina has succeeded in becoming world champion after defeating France on penalties 3-3 (4-2) in the 2022 World Cup final which was held at Lusail Stadium, Sunday (18/12/2022) evening WIB.
Argentina scored two goals in the first half, each scored by Lionel Messi in the 23rd minute through a penalty and Angel Di Maria in the 36th minute.
France did not give up either. Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in the second half to force the match into extra time.
In extra time, Messi had put Argentina ahead before Mbappe equalized who scored his third goal, again with a penalty. Argentina came out as champions after winning the penalty shootout with a score of 4-2.
Argentina also successfully won their third World Cup trophy, while France failed to defend the title they won in the 2018 edition.
First round
Argentina tried to control the game early in the first half. A series of threats were launched by Messi cs, but none of them resulted in a goal.
In the 21st minute, Argentina was awarded a penalty after Di Maria was violated by Ousmane Dembele in the forbidden box. Messi, who became the executioner, also succeeded in deceiving Hugo Lloris.
Argentina was increasingly aggressively suppressing the French defense. Di Maria managed to double the Albiceleste's advantage through his goal in the 36th minute following an assist by Alexis Mac Allister.
40 minutes into the match, Didier Deschamps made a surprising decision by replacing two players at once. Olivier Giroud and Dembele were withdrawn and replaced by Randal Kolo Muani and Marcus Thuram.
No additional goals were created during injury time which lasted up to seven minutes. Score 2-0 for Argentina's advantage to be the result at halftime.
Second round
Back from the locker room, France tried to increase the intensity of their attacks. However, Kylian Mbappe cs is still having trouble dismantling Argentina's dense defense.
On the other hand, even though they slightly lowered the tempo of their game, Argentina was still able to trouble their opponents several times. However, there were no additional goals from the Albiceleste team.
France was awarded a penalty in the 79th minute after Otamendi fouled Kolo Muani. Mbappe, who became the executor, also succeeded in defeating Emiliano Martinez.
Only 90 seconds later, Mbappe again thrilled Martinez' goal, this time through a first-time volley. The score is now even stronger 2-2.
There were no additional goals in the remaining normal time. A 2-2 draw meant the game had to go into extra time.
Extra Time and Penalty Shootout
Entering extra time, Argentina and France both had golden opportunities to score goals. Unfortunately, no goals have been created in the first half.
Argentina finally returned to lead through Messi's goal in the 109th minute. Utilizing a rebound ball, La Pulga successfully leaked the ball into Lloris' goal.
Victory in front of Argentina's eyes again evaporated after France was awarded a penalty in the 117th minute after Mbappe's shot hit Gonzalo Montiel's hand. Mbappe also managed to equalize the score to 3-3.
The winner must be determined by penalty shootout. In this round, the executions of Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni failed to produce goals. Argentina also came out victorious with a score of 4-2.
